Terrible earthquake on southwest China

The 7.8 Richter scale earthquake struck Sichuan province at 14:28 Beijing time on May 12, 2008. The center is Wenchuan County, 92 km from Chengdu city, on the way to JiuzhaiGou valley, the World Heritage nature. Most parts of China including Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Beijing et al felt the earth’ movement. Nearly 20,000 people died because most of the houses were destroyed and the number would increase later. The aftershocks still frequent but the intensity is smaller than before. Prime Minister Wen Jiabao immediately flew to the disaster area to lead rescue. Lots of Roadblock, because of destroyed by landslide of mountains, beside Minjiang river, delayed rescue action. The whole country devoted to rescue, mainly PLA army soldiers including air force. Many companies and persons donated blood, money, clothes, and foods. More than 100 medical teams are sent the disaster areas to rescue victims. West China Hospital, acts as a medical rescue base, to operate on head and bone injured, the other departments, including Dermatology, already prepared the beds to receive the wounded. To prevent the possible coming infectious diseases outbreak and psychological aid are reaffirmed. We believe we will overcome this terrible period with the whole help of our people!

Sichuan dermatologists’ action on 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake rebuild

Dr. Ran Yuping report from Chengdu, China:

On June 15, 2008, dermatologists from Sichuan’s leading hospitals went to Leigu village in Beichuan County (Sichuan province), one of the most serious areas of the Wenchuan earthquake, to assist with the diagnosis and therapy of skin diseases. Three of the Sichuan medical association officers, 11 skin doctors and 8 volunteers were divided into 3 groups to assist in different, separated, temporary settlements. They assisted disaster area peoples and PLA army solders. A total of 660 patients were consulted. The most common skin problems included insect-bites, tinea pedis, eczema and dermatitis. All were given free medication and informational pamphlets on how to prevent and manage various types of skin diseases.
