ISHAM Course in Diagnostic Medical Mycology

The ISHAM Course Diagnostic Medical Mycology is available free and is EACCME accredited. The main goal of the course is to provide a comprehensive resource for people to learn about diagnostic medical mycology via an online learning platform. At the end of the course, participants should have a good understanding of the range of diagnostic techniques that are currently available, the relative advantages and disadvantages of each of the methods and how the methods can be used in different patient populations and different diseases. The course consists of 12 modules and includes an overview of fungal diseases and antifungals, the fungal kingdom and an introduction to diagnostic techniques. Each of the diagnostic methods is then covered in detail in individual modules which include identification of yeasts and moulds; direct microscopy, culture and histopathology; antigen detection; antibody detection; molecular diagnosis, antifungal susceptibility testing and approaches to diagnosis in different patient populations. Participants who pass the final course exam will receive a certificate from ISHAM recognising their participation in the course.

The course is aimed at anyone with an interest in diagnostic medical mycology who would like to deepen their understanding of the area. With extensive reading lists and bibliographies, textbooks recommendations and a fully linked glossary, the course is ideal for those with limited experience in mycology as well as those who have some experience in this area.

Whilst the course cannot replace hands on practical experience, it will hopefully stimulate interest in diagnostic medical mycology and encourage participants to learn more about the area. The course is hosted on the ScholarLMS platform and members who would like to take the course, can find instructions about registering for the course via the button ‘Instructions’ below.

Once you registered for the course, you must complete it within 3 months after which your access will expire.

ISHAM Course Application of Fungal Diagnostics in Clinical Scenarios

The ISHAM Course Application of Fungal Diagnostics in Clinical Scenarios is a companion resource to the ISHAM Diagnostic Medical Mycology Course. The course consists of five cases representing diagnostic decision making in a range of patient types. You may select and review the patient types relevant to your practice. Participants who pass the final course exam covering all cases will receive a certificate from ISHAM recognizing their completion of the course. This course is aimed at anyone who would like to deepen their understanding of fungal diagnostics.

ISHAM Course in Clinical Mycology

The Course in Clinical Mycology provides an overview of the management of a variety of invasive mycoses. At the end of this course, participants should have a good understanding of the clinical management of cryptococcal infections, invasive candidiasis, invasive mold infections, and endemic mycoses. For more information about this in-depth course go to the course website via the button below.

ISHAM supported Microscopy and Histology e-learning

ISHAM financially supports this e-learning course. This course is designed to teach the identification of fungal infection by direct (wet) microscopy or by histology in a full range of tissue specimens. All that is required is a simple microscope and for histology you will learn how to make stains and correctly interpret them. These skills will assist a speedy diagnosis of fungal infections in a patient and improve the chances of early treatment, use of basic microscopy is a more rapid method than direct culture and often more effective.

The course consists of an extensive range of e-learning units, teaching basic microscopy, wet mounts, staining techniques and stain preparation in Modules 1 and 2. Module 3 teaches how to make a histological section, how to preserve the fungal elements and tissue integrity by correct sample processing, through to identifying common and rare fungal features in a diverse range of tissue samples. Module 4 covers advanced skills in histology for identification of uncommon and rare fungal diseases.

The courses are illustrated with many histological images and are supplemented with quizzes, tests and slide presentations to assist. Each module has pre- and post- assessments and is completed with final assessment tests and certification when successfully passed.
