ISHAM NEWS! (19-08-2010)

Dear , a new sequence-based identification tool has been put online by the Molecular Research Laboratory in Sydney, Australia, see here. This database uses ITS barcodes and particularly focuses on medically important fungi.  Sequences deposited are validated by type-strains and therefore provide more reliable identification of less-known fungi than GenBank. This adds to similar databases made available by CBS (here), or focusing on special groups such as Trichoderma (here) or Fusarium (here). A Working Group proposal will soon be submitted to ISHAM with the aim to coordinate the barcoding activities.

The Department of Biological Sciences of Youngstown State University, Ohio, U.S.A. has a vacancy for a postdoc to work on the molecular biology of dimorphism in Penicillium marneffei, see info here. Further details can be obtained from Chester Cooper,

The ISHAM-affiliated Mycology Study Group (MSG) invites you to a 2010 ICAAC Reception and Business Meeting which will be held on Monday evening, September 13, 2010, from 5:45-7:30 PM at the Seaport Hotel (#13 on the ICAAC map).  Registration and a light snack will be available in the “Lighthouse Ballroom”, located on the Plaza level of the Seaport Hotel,  with the business meeting to follow. The main purpose of the business meeting is to provide updates for ongoing MSG studies and to review other related MSG activities. An agenda for the meeting can be found here, and a map is placed here for your convenience.

The new MSG Newsletter (Summer 2010) has appeared and is now available here at the Working Group area of the ISHAM website.

The International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) will organize next congress in Sapporo, Japan, September 2011. The bacteriology and mycology sessions will be 6-11 September, and virology will be one week later. For general info, see the website at here.
