It is our aim to harmonize the language of medical mycology for clinical use. Novel taxonomic achievements should be adopted when scientifically sound and clinically / ecologically meaningful. To this aim, general consensus is needed, which can only be achieved by democratic procedures. We will discuss the numerous nomenclatural issues in the WG prior to coming to recommendations. The online database provides a very simple tool to find these names, which will certainly mitigate the problem of nomenclatural instability.
In a multi-authored consensus paper we provided recommendations that could enhance nomenclatural stability. A paper is being published on the main ecological strategies of clinically relevant fungi; this has become a basis for naming of diseases. A database with all currently used / recommended names of fungi and diseases has been set up; this will be expanded with all synonymous and obsolete names mentioned in the medical literature.
A paper on disease nomenclature is close to being published; this will be added to the database.
