While substantial progress has been made in diagnosing histoplasmosis, especially with the use of Histoplasma antigen detection, there are still many gaps in our understanding of the disease. These gaps include the need for further epidemiological studies, implementation studies using modern diagnostic tools and improvements in therapeutic approaches. Further basic science on the fungus is also required, including (natural history and biomarkers not fully understand or described), together with Histoplasma evolutionary biology, host-pathogen interaction, and immunology of severe forms.
