Pan-Africa Mycology

Mission Statement

PAMWG comprises a group of dedicated medical professionals and researchers working to enhance the diagnosis and care of patients with fungal diseases in Africa. Our mission is to improve the interaction and synergy among regional leaders by developing and implementing educational programs, clinical guidelines, and country-specific initiatives. Our capacity-building efforts help healthcare professionals improve their understanding of fungal diseases, how to diagnose them and their management. PAMWG is dedicated to making a difference in public health in Africa.

Achievements of the working group in 2023

PAMWG successfully organized its first conference on 30th and 31st May 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya. The conference discussions and deliberations resulted in the formulation of ‘The Nairobi Declaration 2023: A commitment to address deadly yet neglected fungal diseases in Africa’ which has been subsequently published in Medical Mycology (see below, publication section). To improve writing and build capacity in producing great manuscript, a free webinar was organized by PAMWG, facilitated by Prof. dr. Oliver Cornely.

Upcoming events planned for 2024-2025

• To organize intensive clinical training workshop in ‘Diagnosis and Management of Invasive Fungal Infections’ for clinicians from Selected African Countries
• To organize hands-on laboratory training workshop in ‘Conventional and Contemporary Approaches in the Laboratory Diagnosis of Fungal Infections’ for laboratory scientists/technologists from Selected African Countries
• To organize a joint seminar in commemoration of 2024 World Aspergillosis Day
