Medical Phycology 2016

Overview

This WG aims to be a forum where specialists in algal infections in humans and animals may join efforts to build a network to increase the knowledge in this area.

Achievements

  1. The Internet website of the WG (http://medicalphycology.org/) has been updated.
  2. A symposium in ISHAM Melbourne in 2015 on “Medical phycology 2015: Interdisciplinary research” was held on Wednesday 6 May 2015 in Melbourne, Australia.
    At the 19th Congress of the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM) a successful symposium on human and animal protothecosis was held to understand genetic and virulence of the algae. Moreover, the symposium was introduced for epidemiology for human and animal prototechosis. This symposium enlightened the attendance on the recent worldwide problem of this infectious disease. Participants consisted of physician-scientists, veterinarians, microbiologists, medical technologists, molecular biologists, and others.
  3. A business meeting of working group was held on 6th May 2015 at the ISHAM congress.  There were 8 members in attendance, including the co-ordinators: John R. Todd and Tadahiko Matsumoto, the Secretary: Rui Kano and general members: Allan Britten, J. Murugaiyan, Michiaki Masuda, Ryohei Ueno and Tomotaka Sato
  4. The working group held a one day joint symposium with the ISHAM-Veterinary Working Group during the meeting of the Japanese Society of Veterinary Society (JSVS) on 8th of September 2016 at Nihon University College of Bioresource Sciences in Kanagawa, Japan. The abstracts, report and photograph of participants are attached. 

  5. Dr. Tadahiko Matsumoto resigned as working group junior coordinator on July 31, 2015 and Dr. Koichi Makimura succeeded to his post on August 1, 2015. Drs. John Todd and Rui Kano remained as the  senior coordinator and secretary, respectively. Dr. Matsumoto continued as a general member of WG.
